About Learning with Mbali

The foundation was started by Maria Valaskatzis, who believes that education is the key to changing lives and reducing disparities in the education system between advantaged and disadvantaged communities.

  1. The foundation’s main goals are to:Create storybooks with at-home learning worksheets to reinforce the curriculum for foundation phase children (grades R-3) ni English, mathematics, and life orientation skills.
  2. Translate the books into Zulu to reach and benefit more children.
  3. Organize stationery and school clothes drives to support underprivileged students.
  4. Promote the mental health of foundation phase children through the Feelings Journal, created by Maria.
  5. Conduct drives within schools with psychologists and nurses to address
    the importance of mental health.

Focusing on English, mathematics, and life orientation skills is crucial for the holistic development of children in the foundation phase. English is the primary language of instruction in most South African schools, so proficiency in the language is essential for academic success. Mathematics lays the foundation for critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are vital for future learning and life. Life orientation helps children develop social and emotional skills, as well as an understanding of their rights and responsibilities as citizens.

More about our projects

Promoting mental health is equally important for children’s well-being and academic performance. The foundation phase is a crucial time for social and emotional development, and addressing mental health concerns early on can prevent more serious issues from arising later in life. By conducting drives with psychologists and nurses, Learning with Mbali aims to raise awareness about mental health and provide support to children who may be struggling. While the internet offers free educational resources, it’s important to recognize that not everyone has access to the internet or devices to utilize these resources effectively. Books provided by organizations like First Book,
Books for Kids, Children’s Book Project, Kids Need to Read, and Bridge of Books Foundation serve as invaluable resources for children in underprivileged communities who may lack internet access or electronic devices.

  1. Books offer several advantages as educational resources:Accessibility: Books do not require internet connectivity or electronic devices, making them accessible to children in remote or underserved areas where internet access may be limited.
  2. Tactile and Visual Learning: Physical books engage multiple senses, promoting tactile and visual learning experiences that can enhance comprehension and retention, especially for young children.
  3. Promotion of Literacy: Having physical books at home encourages a culture of reading and literacy, fostering a love for books and learning from an early age.
  4. Community Engagement: Libraries and literacy programs provided by these organizations create spaces for community engagement, storytelling, and shared reading experiences that foster social connections and a sense of belonging.
  5. Cultural Representation: Physical books often feature diverse characters and stories that reflect the cultural backgrounds and experiences of children, promoting inclusivity and representation.
  6. Development of Imagination: Reading physical books stimulates imagination and creativity, allowing children to visualize stories and characters in their minds, which is essential for cognitive development.

In summary

while the internet offers a wealth of educational resources, physical books remain a vital and essential resource for children without internet access or devices. These books not only provide educational content but also foster a love for reading, promote literacy, and create opportunities for community engagement and cultural enrichment that are invaluable for the holistic development of children in underprivileged communities.
